The safe management of waste from our operations and projects is essential to operating responsibly and we are committed to minimising impacts to our people, communities and the environment.
Each year, our Cannington operation in Queensland, Australia has on average 250 used tyres, with a total weight of more than 250 tonnes, requiring disposal. The tyres are from light vehicles, mining haul trucks and underground loaders with some tyres weighing up to 1.2 tonnes each.
Historically, the used tyres were stockpiled on site or used for barricading roads around the operation. With the stockpile growing to more than 1,250 tonnes of mining tyre waste, the team at Cannington looked at ways to recycle the used tyres locally.
At the start of FY25, more than 28 tonnes of used tyres were recycled and turned into rubber crumb and granule, which were later used in the resealing of a local road and the surface of a new community sporting complex.
Over the next four years, the aim is to recycle all the tyres in the stockpile to be used in a variety of community projects. Going forward, all used tyres will go directly to a local recycling facility and will no longer be stockpiled.
