Cerro Matoso celebrates the 40th anniversary of its first tonne of nickel
Our Cerro Matoso operation in Colombia has celebrated the 40th anniversary of its first tonne of nickel produced back in 1982.
The team, together with family, contractors, community members and local government representatives, came together at the weekend to commemorate the milestone and their many shared achievements over four decades of operations. Around 3000 people attended the special event, which included performances by local bands and DJs, dancing and even a fireworks display.
Speaking at the event, Cerro Matoso Vice President Operations, Ricardo Gaviria, said Cerro Matoso was proud of its journey over the past 40 years.
“It is with great passion and commitment that we are here today, having contributed to the economy, as well the development of the region and the country,” Ricardo said.
“Forty years can be summarised with great numbers and fantastic achievements, with more than US$50 million invested in community programs, 1800 graduates from our educational foundation, 190 higher education scholarships awarded to community members, the contribution of US$1.8 billion in taxes and royalties, the conservation of more than 1,600 hectares of forest, and the planting of more than 400,000 trees.
“Over the years we have seen the transformation of the territory where we operate and the creation of value in our environment, which makes the Cerro Matoso team and the people of Cordoba feel pride in what we have built together."
