Mozal supporting engineering at Mozambique's Eduardo Mondlane University
In the 1990s, Samuel Gudo was a young engineering student just starting out at Eduardo Mondlane University, Mozambique’s largest and oldest public academic institution.
Fast forward 30 years and Samuel, as Vice President Operations at our Mozal Aluminium operation, recently returned to the engineering faculty to speak at the opening of the refurbished auditorium, made possible with funding by Mozal.
Most of the engineers in Mozambique, including those who have worked at Mozal, have been trained at the university. With a growing national demand for engineering professionals, we’re proud to support such an important institution. The refurbishment saw the auditorium’s capacity double to 210 students per class, while budding engineers will also enjoy a more comfortable experience with the installation of air conditioning and other amenities.
At the official handover ceremony Samuel reminisced about his university days and how pleasing it was to give back to the place that helped shape him.
“Standing in this room today brings back memories of when I was a student here, sitting in one of these desks attending Mathematical Analysis and Analytical Geometry lessons,” Samuel said.
“Most of Mozal's engineers, including myself, are children of this house. Therefore, it is with a sense of accomplishment that, on behalf of Mozal, I address you today to handover this auditorium.”
The University rector, Professor Orlando Quilambo, thanked Mozal for its ongoing support and said the revamped auditorium would make a big difference to the training of future engineers.
