Hillside Aluminium supporting enhanced children’s healthcare in the community

14 MARCH 2025

Our Hillside Aluminium operation in the province of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa seeks to make a meaningful contribution to the local economy and to support local communities through a range of social investments.

Located close to Hillside Aluminium and servicing several surrounding districts, the Queen Nandi Hospital is dedicated exclusively to obstetrics, gynaecology, and neonatal care. Each year, the hospital provides around 8,000 deliveries and 2,000 gynaecological surgeries, often operating at over-capacity and sometimes borrowing equipment from other wards or transferring children to other hospitals.

In response to these challenges, Hillside Aluminium has partnered with the hospital over the past four years and has invested R6.8 million towards initiatives aimed at improving health outcomes for infants and young children.  These include:

  • Providing equipment to combat COVID-19;

  • Supporting the installation of a paediatric ICU access control system;

  • Donating a neonatal retina camera to help detect blindness in infants; and most recently

  • Donating 56 paediatric cot beds in FY25 to help enhance the care of young patients.

Anticipated outcomes of enhancing the capacity and equipment of the paediatric unit include reduced morbidity and mortality rates, increased capacity of medical personnel, and uplifted morale among hospital staff.
