Improving healthcare access in South Africa

10 MARCH 2025

In Meyerton, South Africa, we have provided social investment funding to build a new community healthcare clinic near our Metalloys smelter*.

Opened in January 2025, the R4.1 million Sicelo Clinic will help support long-term improvements to healthcare access and community wellbeing in the area. The clinic was initially established as a mobile facility to respond to COVID-19 needs and has been transformed into a fully operational healthcare centre, including 12 rooms, public toilets and a medical waste facility.

The clinic was delivered in partnership with local government, the South Africa Medical and Education Foundation and Department of Health and has created 44 ongoing job opportunities for community members, supporting local employment and economic development. Furthermore, 14 temporary job opportunities were created during the construction phase.

Over the past decade, we have invested more than R100 million in the Sedibeng district of Gauteng province supporting a range of projects, such as the construction of classrooms at Meyerton High School, the refurbishment of Sebokeng Paediatric Ward and ICU medical equipment and the Kotulong Community Centre for vulnerable children.

We seek to contribute meaningfully to communities where we operate through the social investments we make. In FY24, our Group social investment spend totalled US$23.6 million, with more than 40 per cent spent in South Africa.
