International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples
On the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples, we’re showing our
appreciation for a small business we’re very proud to support – Bush Medijina.
Based on Groote Eylandt in Australia’s Northern Territory, where GEMCO is located,
the Indigenous business and social enterprise is owned and run by Warnindilyakwa
women, and is the embodiment of this year’s theme, ‘The role of indigenous women
in the preservation and transmission of traditional knowledge’.
The Bush Medijina team harvest bush produce on country, as taught by their
mothers, aunties and grandmothers. They combine native botanicals with natural,
sustainable ingredients to carefully handcraft contemporary products including
balms, soaps and body butter using traditional bush recipes passed down through
the generations.
The business helps build culture and capability across the remote community and
supports the Warnindilyakwa Elders’ vision of a sustainable, independent enterprise
to benefit current and future generations.
We recognise the importance of developing a sustainable post-mining legacy and
GEMCO provides Bush Medijina with funding and assistance to develop a social
change framework.
