Grace is a Graduate Mining Engineer at our Cannington operation in Northwest Queensland. Through the South32 Graduate Program, Grace is gaining hands-on underground experience in Production and Development, working alongside frontline crews and operating large machinery. We asked Grace about her experience - here’s what she had to say.
Tell us a bit about your role at South32
I am a Graduate Mining Engineer working with Cannington’s Operations Engineering Team, responsible for coordinating haulage and production firing schedules. I also help to manage electrical infrastructure, working with the electrical team to ensure power access at mining fronts.
Tell us about your first year in South32’s Graduate Program
The South32 Graduate Program has been a great transition from university to the workforce, providing support and structured learning. While underground work was challenging due to harsh conditions and physical demands, I gained skills beyond university. I gained first-hand experience in translating theoretical plans into practical action and navigating real-world challenges. A highlight has been working alongside frontline crews and learning to operate incredible machinery.
What made you choose a career in STEM and the resources industry?
Growing up, I developed a passion for science and mathematics.
I earned a Bachelor of Commerce and a Bachelor of Civil Engineering from the University of Sydney, with my honours thesis focusing on climate change adaptation and disaster risk resilience. As part of the study, I had the opportunity to complete multiple fieldwork excursions in the Philippines, where I used key informant interviews to directly shape research conclusions. Although unrelated to my career path, it fueled my curiosity about human-environment interactions and sparked my interest in the mining and resources industry.
Last year, I moved to Brisbane to pursue a mining career.
What are your next steps for your career?
I have much to learn in my current role and within the Operations Engineering Team. I’m eager to progress into a short-term scheduling position for more exposure to development and drilling schedules.
I am also looking forward to participating in the Emergency Response Team beginner training program in March, which will be an excellent opportunity to contribute to a team and support the health and safety of everyone at Cannington.
What advice would you give to prospective students looking to apply for a graduate position?
For students looking to apply to South32’s graduate program, I highly recommend attending your university’s student outreach or career nights as that’s how I first heard about South32 and had the chance to meet current graduates who encouraged me to apply.
Passion, determination, and grit go a long way - be yourself, and professional success will follow.
Applications are set to open for the 2026 Graduate Program in the coming months. Learn more about South32's Graduate Program here.
