The team at our Mozal Aluminium have stepped forward to deliver a US$1.8 million expansion and rehabilitation of a local primary school – with the new facility catering to the education needs of more than 4,000 students.
At local schools surrounding our Mozal Aluminium operation in Mozambique, overcrowded classrooms meant some students were learning outside.
To help tackle the shortage of facilities, the team at Mozal stepped forward –investing US$1.8 million to expand and rehabilitate the school – with the new facility catering to the education needs of more than 4,000 students.
The new Escola Básica de Malhampsene school includes 21 classrooms, which have reduced overcrowding in the school, eliminating the need for classes to be held outside, and contributing to a more inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for our communities.
At a special handover ceremony led by our Country President Mozambique, Sam Gudo, which was attended by students, teachers, local leaders and community members, Sam said the Mozal team had worked closely with the community to understand local issues and the need for school upgrades.
“When we became aware of children studying under trees, exposed to adverse weather conditions, we stepped forward and planned the quickest way to help. In July 2023 we began construction and six months later we handed over a completely new school,” he said.
This project follows the construction of Mozambique’s largest high school by Mozal, which opened in 2022, and included 48 classrooms, a 500-person auditorium, a library, a computer room, two administrative blocks, water reservoirs, a canteen, a multipurpose sports field, and a soccer field.
