New technology at Cerro Matoso is helping to create a safe and inclusive workplace

23 AUGUST 2024

Our commitment to improving our safety performance is at the heart of the latest initiative at Cerro Matoso (CMSA) -the first remotely operated D9 bulldozers in Colombia.

Through a partnership with RELIANZ, a Caterpillar equipment distributor, this new system, featuring CatMineStar Command technology, will help make our operation safer, reduce fuel consumption and increase productivity.

Installed in two D9 tractor bulldozers at CMSA, the technology enables operators to work from a remote operating station, improving safety and reducing operational inefficiencies and costs. It also cuts fuel consumption and emissions, supporting our decarbonisation activities.

The remotely operated bulldozers can undertake tasks including soil excavation, managing floors in loading areas, preparing blast zones, and road construction and maintenance, and enables access to steeper slopes which can increase material moved per shift by 20 to 30 per cent.

Remote operating stations support a more inclusive and collaborative work environment, allowing individuals who might not be able to work on-site, such as those with disabilities, to participate in the mining industry. The stations also provide opportunities to collaborate across different locations.
