Students gain valuable experience

Students from the University of Arizona have gained valuable experience in the mining industry with summer internships at our Hermosa project.

With demand for mining specialists on the rise in Arizona, USA, partnering with local universities is one of the ways we’re making sure students know what we do and what career opportunities we have to offer.

The interns had the opportunity to work alongside the South32 team and learn about core logging, geologic mapping and rock quality designation, which measures the quality of rock taken from a borehole.

Souaibou Camara, a graduate student in mining engineering, said he really enjoyed learning about the process of core logging, a process used to collect data during drill programs.

Claire Getz is a second-year master’s student in economic geology, who in addition to core logging, gained experience with rock quality designation, which measures the quality of rock taken from a borehole.

Matthew Banaszynski said one of the things he enjoyed most about his internship was getting hands on experience and helping with geologic mapping.
