Evolving climate change and other sustainability-related policy and regulations, as well as higher societal awareness of sustainability topics means that customers are increasingly considering environmental and social factors in their purchasing decisions.
For producers of aluminium, a metal that will play an important role in the energy transition, the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) Certification provides their customers with independent assurance of a company’s commitment to sustainable and responsible practices in their value chains.
In September 2024, our Worsley Alumina operation in Western Australia successfully obtained full ASI Performance Standard Certification, which follows Mozal Aluminium’s certification in 2022. To obtain certification, Worsley Alumina compiled and presented the information and evidence required to meet the ASI’s 11 principles and 62 criteria, and an independent, third-party audit was carried out by KPMG Australia.
From mining bauxite and refining it into alumina at Worsley Alumina, to refining alumina into aluminium at Mozal Aluminium, we can demonstrate full ASI certification within our aluminium value chain. Worsley Alumina is one of only a few alumina refineries in the world which is certified against version 3.0 of the ASI Performance Standard.
In FY25, we plan to commence an audit of Worsley Alumina to support its potential application for ASI Chain of Custody (CoC) Certification against the ASI CoC Standard. This standard complements the ASI Performance Standard validating responsible production and product sourcing.
